WINERIES FOR CLIMATE PROTECTION

U MES U has received the WfCP Wineries for Climate Protection Certification thanks to its compromise with the environment and its ambitious continuous improvement plans for the future of its winery Mas Romaní in Font-rubí, in the Alt Penedès region.

In May, U MES U received the first and only specific certification of environmental sustainability for the wine sector, the certification Wineries for Climate Protection.

Developed by the Spanish Wine Federation (Federación Española del Vino – FEV) and granted by Lloyd’s Register, this certification establishes the environmental criteria sustainable wineries must meet. This certification is geared towards ongoing improvement and sustainability in wineries, based on four key areas: reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG), water management, waste reduction and energy efficiency and renewable energy. This project has not only covered facilities and processes of U MES U headquarters at Mas Romaní, but also its different locations and external ageing warehouses.

For U MES U, the commitment to the environment is the main basis upon which to build the future, in addition to a reputational advantage towards customers and consumers. U MES U is a winery that traditionally stands out for the elaboration of the 100% of the production of organic wines and cavas. A further step towards the protection of biodiversity.

U MES U counts with an ambitious plan of cutting emissions by the use of renewable energies, reaching out the 95% of today’s total consumption and reducing by a 76% its emissions compared to 2020. Main focus was on the installation of solar panels and thus reducing the dependence on lattice energy.

In terms of water efficiency, the good practices in water uses have allowed a reduction in consumption of an 18%, with a tendency to improve.

An ambitious waste reduction plan has been developed with the aim to improve its management and control. The plan has reached a valuation of the 67% and it intends to make a progress on circularity thanks to an optimization of waste consumption, eco-design, sustainable procurement, a prolongation of the life cycle of resources and supporting recyclability.

With this new certification, U MES U confirms its commitment and involvement in the sustainable development of its activity not only working on the areas of environmental protection, but also carrying out important progresses on social, cultural and regional aspects, as well as consumer’s health and security.
