We are pleased to announce that our wine Dahlia has been awarded a Gold Medal at the latest edition of the international competition Grenaches du Monde 2025, held on May 5th and 6th in Cariñena, Zaragoza.
Grenaches du Monde is one of the world’s most prestigious and specialized competitions, dedicated exclusively to wines made from Grenache. This year’s edition featured more than 700 wines from over 50 designations of origin and 6 different countries, evaluated by an international panel of 80 experts from 19 nationalities, including sommeliers, oenologists, and wine industry professionals.
This award places Dahlia among the most outstanding wines of the competition. Out of more than 700 entries, only 199 wines received a Gold Medal—a selection that highlights the high standards of the event. Among Catalan wines, only 45 earned a Gold Medal, and of those, 4 belong to the DO Penedès, including Dahlia.
This accolade is a recognition of the most special rosé wine crafted at U MES U.
What makes Dahlia rosé wine so special?
The variety
For us, Grenache is the great Mediterranean red variety, offering intriguing fruity aromas and mouth-filling volume. When carefully crafted with gentle pressing, it provides great delicacy and elegance.
The vineyard
The foundation of Dahlia is the Carrerada vineyard, located in Font-rubí, which gives us a balanced grape with a high acidity level, allowing us to produce a wine with pronounced freshness.
Gentle and slow pressing – low yield but great purity
The grapes are hand-harvested and quickly transported to the winery to begin pressing. What sets this pressing apart is that it is done gently and slowly, yielding only 40 liters per 100 kilograms of grapes—about 20% less than a conventional pressing.
As a result, the juice obtained—known as “free-run juice”—comes exclusively from the pulp, since this delicate process avoids the aggressive breaking of the grape skins.
The outcome is a grey-hued, very pale must with clean primary aromas, fruity and floral in profile, and without the vegetative notes or bitter touches that typically come from the skins.
A unique organoleptic profile
Aromas
In the world of rosé wines, there are two main aromatic profiles: fermentative aromas and thiolic aromas. Fermentative aromas, typical of warmer climates, are characterized by red fruit notes. In contrast, thiolic aromas, more common in cooler regions, evoke exotic fruit.
What makes Dahlia such a special rosé is that it does not fit neatly into either of these categories. In Dahlia, you can find nuances of these two dimensions, as well as floral and citrus notes, with mandarin standing out especially.
Texture and freshness
It stands out for its full-bodied texture, maintaining freshness on the palate and a long aftertaste.
Its history
Dahlia has been produced at the U MES U winery since 2006, being one of the first rosé wines made both in Penedès and in Catalonia.
The Dahlia vineyard had the ideal qualities to produce a rosé wine. The U MES U team of winemakers understood that the best way to unlock the potential of that specific vineyard was through this delicate production method, which yields the most subtle notes of this variety. Once the wine was made, it was decided to name it after the Dahlia flower, as a tribute to the mother of the founder of U MES U, who admired this flower for its ephemeral beauty and planted it every spring in the garden.
